The finished space has many closets for storage and a bonus room that is used for craft work

The remodeled basement is a comfortable and ample space for the retired family member--a suite away from the rest of the family but still close enough to join in and cook when desired. It makes it possible for each generation of the family to live comfortably under the same roof and still have an easy getaway

By relocating the fireplace to an adjacent wall and opening that West wall to a large sliding door, the change is transformative. Not only is light from those doors clearly visible down to the home's entry, but the 4-panel sliding door opens the view of the room to the outdoors, making it feel larger

The new gas insert fireplace can now be thoroughly enjoyed, flanked by custom-built cabinets. The cabinets were designed to hold audio/ video equipment, so have panels made from fabric to all heat and sound out. Concealed lighting brightens display shelves on each side

That fireplace was removed entirely, and replaced with a new gas fireplace, completed with a concrete hearth and mantle, and a surround in a mix of concrete and blackened steel

The work started with a revamp of the media room. By adding windows, the room is now filled with light during the day, and a comfortable screening room at night. To complete this work, the foundation and pony wall were retrofitted and the walls furred out accept insulation. That also provided the opportunity to wire for a complete projection and speaker system for the media room. Previously wires had been tacked to the walls

Aside from the main floor bumpout, the big wow of this project is the floors and newly painted millwork, walls and ceilings

Vaulting the ceiling in this room opens up all the possibilities of Lake Washington living. Note the expansive view of the lake and Mercer Island through a wall of windows

The TV in the living room is a high-tech center, with cutting-edge whole-house music, lighting and security controls

The basement remodel seattle is now truly a daylight basement. A bank of windows provides a view of the back yard and brings in ample light to this new living space

Custom built in place, the cabinet doubles as a computer station. The door to the left opens up to a mechanical closet, with furnace and hot water heater

The new doors to a storage room and the garage match the ones upstairs, and the beadboard wainscot runs on two walls, echoing the design of the cabinet

This basement room becomes a media room as well, with all of the bells and whistles required for the flat screen and low voltage accessories

The living room had been dark, with large bookshelves flanking the fireplace. A new mantle with Craftsman detailing is made from quarter-sawn oak. It brings a whole new feeling to this room while keeping the original fireplace facade

A lower level that had been completely unfinished is now a comfortable media room, with new windows and doors and the same fir casework as the upper level. The owners tell us they are thrilled with the new areas

The former location of the kitchen becomes a cozy media room, with a new entrance to the powder bath and a row of high Lindal windows

Even the living room gets a makeover - the area to the right of the fireplace used to have a cabinet and a hall into the kitchen
