Cladding the openings with natural wood to match the look of the living room beams provides linkage from one room to the next and is an organic counterpoint to the primarily contemporary finishes

One element that required a complete overhaul was the living room fireplace. The out-sized brick is now gone, replaced with black slate, and a raised, honed hearth in absolute black granite. The same quartered walnut cabinets are used to cover a concealed television above the fireplace, with a rolled steel frame

The new gas insert fireplace can now be thoroughly enjoyed, flanked by custom-built cabinets. The cabinets were designed to hold audio/ video equipment, so have panels made from fabric to all heat and sound out. Concealed lighting brightens display shelves on each side

The mantle was the only thing saved from the original fireplace--a slab of wood that had been salvaged from a local historic building many years ago. The ends required cuts, so our carpenters artistically reproduced the colors of the rest of the slab on the cut ends

The natural wood is inset into a sheetrock frame to the left, and the VG fir extends through the fireplace opening, creating a clear delineation between the dining and living areas without blocking light

The other side of fireplace also had a makeover, with a full sheetrock wrap, steel detailing and subtle but beautiful tile. 'Note the blackened steel baseboards that wrap around the end

That fireplace was removed entirely, and replaced with a new gas fireplace, completed with a concrete hearth and mantle, and a surround in a mix of concrete and blackened steel

By removing it and selecting a living room wall as the location for a new gas fireplace, the floor plan is now open. Throughout, the short-length red oak flooring was replaced with larger-format quarter sawn white oak flooring with no stain. It's a subtle but amazing change

The floating hearth is cast concrete and the surround is quartzite, with puc-lit niches. The hearth is engineered to double as a seating area while entertaining, and tape light along the top edge of the quartzite surround illuminates the ceiling

From the table, there's a nice peek of the original river rock fireplace. The door and window trim in this room and through the rest of the home is mixed grain fir, stained to match the original trim

The living room had been dark, with large bookshelves flanking the fireplace. A new mantle with Craftsman detailing is made from quarter-sawn oak. It brings a whole new feeling to this room while keeping the original fireplace facade
